Let’s face it: installing Microsoft Windows updates is a laborious process that we repeatedly put off till it starts up. The main cause is that Windows updates still take a very long time to install, even in 2024. That will soon change, though, as Microsoft appears to have heeded our request with the release of the Windows 11 24H2 update.
The most recent version of Windows 11 24H2 offers “reduced installation time, restart time, and central processing unit (CPU) usage for Windows monthly updates,” according to Steve DiAcetis, Principal Program Manager Lead at Microsoft, who made this announcement on the Microsoft Tech Community.
He provides test results to support these assertions. They began by making minor adjustments to a “well-maintained device” that was running Windows 11 22H2 (Build 22621.3155) and updating it to the patch for the next month. They then contrasted it with a Windows 11 24H2 system.
The findings showed that the update took 45.6% less time to install and 39.7% less time to restart. Furthermore, there was a 15.3% decrease in CPU utilization time. However, the tests don’t stop there.
In order to compare the test findings, they upgrade a PC that hasn’t been updated in 18 months, further broadening the testing grounds. With a 25% decrease in CPU utilization and a 33.5% faster restart time, this Windows 11 24H2 computer was now 43.6% faster at installing updates.
The article also highlights the similarities between the 23H2 and Windows 11 22H2 servicing stacks. Therefore, these findings essentially show how both of these versions would stack up against the enhanced 24H2’s update installation capabilities.
Steve further explains that regular feature upgrades have been reduced in size by about 200 MB. While other apps like Mail, Calendar, and Notepad must be updated through the Microsoft Store, this has been accomplished by incorporating system apps like Settings and File Explorer within the Windows monthly update.
Now that I don’t have to wait forever for my Windows 11 laptop to update and restart, I’m ecstatic. Time will tell, though, if it is as good as the test findings indicate. How about you? Please share your opinions in the comments section below!
